Google Business Profile for home-based business owners has always been something I recommend. If I’m being honest, I’ve been a little hypocritical.
I constantly stress the importance of Google Business Profile for local SEO, urging clients to claim and optimize it as a core marketing asset.
Yet, I hadn’t set up my own profile.
It wasn’t that I doubted its value. I just didn’t want to deal with video verification or risk having my home address show up online.
If you run a home-based business or a small nonprofit like I do, you probably get why I hesitated.
Recently, I received an email from Google about changes to their verification options, so I decided to go for it. Here’s what surprised me.
I Didn’t Have to Do the Video Verification
This was the biggest shock.
I fully expected to go through the whole process, recording a video of my workspace, proving my business existed, and jumping through all the usual hoops.
But that never happened.
I submitted my information, followed the steps, and no video was required.
Now, my profile is still processing, so nothing is official yet. But the fact that I got this far without that step is a big deal.
If you have been putting this off for the same reason, you are not alone. Thankfully, you might not need to go through that arduous process anymore.
You Can Keep Your Home Address Private and Still Show Up Locally
This was my other worry.
Listing my home address online was out of the question.
Now, to be clear, I already knew about service-area businesses. I use that setup all the time for clients with a physical location but who serve customers elsewhere.
What I had not fully connected was how that setup could be used for a home-based business like mine.
When you select a service-area business, your address stays hidden from the public, yet your business can still appear in local search results.
During setup, you must provide your legal address to Google for verification. Although Google will confirm your location with this information, your address will not be visible to the public on your profile.
Think of it like this. You are verifying your location behind the scenes, but you are not putting your front door on display.
For home-based businesses and nonprofits operating from a residential address, this removes a major barrier without compromising your privacy.
Why Google Business Profile for Home-Based Business Matters
Relying on social media or word of mouth only means missing a major opportunity.
Local SEO is about showing up when someone searches for what you offer nearby. Things like “marketing help near me” or “small business marketing near me.”
And your Google Business Profile plays a central role in that.
It is often the first thing people see. Your reviews, your services, your updates, all in one place.
I’ve talked about this in another post on local SEO. It really comes down to this: showing up in local search builds trust and helps people choose you over someone nearby.
Skipping this step is a bit like having a great storefront but keeping the lights off.

What This Means for You
If you have been putting off setting up your profile, here is your sign to revisit it.
The process may be easier than you expect. Especially if:
- You run a home-based business
- You want to keep your address private
- You already have a basic online presence
Even if video verification still comes up, it does not happen every time anymore.
And if it does not, you have just removed one of the biggest roadblocks to getting found locally.
A Quick Reality Check
If you’ve hesitated, I understand; I did too.
It was never the setup itself that stopped me. It was the verification process.
But this turned out to be a lot more straightforward than I expected. It might be worth taking another look.
And if you want help getting your profile set up properly or making sure it is actually working for you, that is exactly what I help clients with.
