How AI and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Are Changing Local SEO

In my last post, I talked about what Local SEO is and why it matters for small businesses. But the way people search is changing fast — and AI is right at the center of it.

You’ve probably noticed that Google and other platforms are starting to answer questions directly instead of just showing a list of links. Or maybe you’ve asked Alexa or Siri to “find a coffee shop near me.” This shift is thanks to something called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — and it’s changing how businesses get found online.

If you’re a local business, this matters more than ever.

AEO is about making your content the kind that AI-powered search tools can pull directly into answers. These tools include:

  • Google’s AI-generated search results (Search Generative Experience)
  • Voice assistants like Siri and Alexa
  • Chatbots and AI tools like Bing AI or even ChatGPT

Instead of just listing websites, these systems summarize answers — and if your business is the one being pulled into those answers, you’re winning.

More people are asking questions like:

  • “Best dog groomer near me with good reviews”
  • “Affordable yoga studio open on Sundays in [city]”
  • “How much does a massage cost in [neighborhood]?”

And search engines are starting to answer those questions directly.

That means:

  • Fewer people are clicking on traditional links
  • Your content needs to be clear, structured, and local-friendly
  • Google is pulling answers from places like your website, Google Business Profile, and online reviews

Here are a few simple ways to get ahead of the curve — no tech background required.

1. Create Content That Answers Questions

AI tools love content that answers questions directly.

  • Add an FAQ section to your website
  • Write blog posts that answer common customer questions
  • Include phrases people might say out loud in voice search (like “Where can I find gluten-free pizza near downtown Denver?”)

2. Keep Your Google Business Profile Fully Updated

Google often pulls info straight from here — especially for local, service-based searches.

  • Make sure hours, location, services, and photos are current
  • Use the Q&A section to answer common questions
  • Post updates regularly (specials, events, reminders)

3. Use Schema Markup on Your Website

This is a more technical tip, but worth mentioning.

Schema is a type of code that tells search engines exactly what your content is about. It helps Google understand your business and show it in answers.

  • Use “local Business” schema on your homepage
  • Use “FAQ” schema on question-based content
  • Not sure how? Website builders like WordPress have plugins that can help

4. Encourage Detailed Reviews

AI pulls sentiment and information from your reviews — especially on Google.

  • Ask customers to mention what service they received and where
  • Example: “Loved my haircut at [Salon Name] in North Hills!”
  • Respond to reviews to show you’re active and trustworthy

5. Use Natural, Conversational Phrases

Think about how people actually speak when they search — especially with voice.

Instead of “best dental services,” try “Who’s the best dentist near [your city]?”
Write like you’re having a conversation, not writing an essay.

You don’t need to become an expert in algorithms or chase every new tech trend. But understanding how AI is changing the way people search helps you stay ahead — and show up where it counts.

Answer Engine Optimization isn’t replacing Local SEO — it’s building on it. And by taking a few small steps now, you can make sure your business stays visible, trustworthy, and easy to find in this new search world.
